Exactly the time that I thought would be the best I could expect. I was always within 30 metres of the 4.15 pacer and decided no matter how good I felt at anytime in the run I would not go in front of him. I did that and was pleased to have run the time I had.
If it can be the last 12k was one of the most enjoyable I have had for a long time. We hit 30k and the pace said well that is half way in the marathon. How true !! I downed a GU and just decided to settle into a strong even pace and think POSITIVE.
I was pleased to maintain the pace and over the last 16k made up almost 200 places. There a lot of runners slowing down - when you pass so many you think you are increasing your pace but they are just slowing down. Whatever it is empowering to be the one passing others.
One of the best mornings Canberra has put on for the marathon.
Also by far the biggest start field I have seen in the last 14 years. Despite that it did not feel too crowded in the first k or so - you just had to be patient and for me by 2k it was open space. All goes to a nice steady start.

Short story on preparation. My longest run in the last 2 months was 21k and almost all the other was between 7/14k with a few weeks of no running post op. Soon after the op I looked at the cut off and thought that would be an issue for me. However the training runs although short and slow did go better than expected and after the 21k three weeks ago I knew the cut off time would not be an issue.
The tube is out on Friday and I should be able to resume a more normal life. Next marathon is the Barossa Valley in SA at the end of May. So long to wait ...
